Community Toxic Waste Removal

Our team responded to a critical toxic waste cleanup project alongside a military unit conducting waterways management and site maintenance. During a routine field inspection, we uncovered roughly 70 batteries buried 6 feet under the soil and along the waterline. The unknown origins and duration of the buried batteries raised immediate environmental concerns.

We quickly secured the site and contacted the local hazardous waste disposal team. Concurrently, we conducted extensive toxicology reports on the water and soil. This prompt action was crucial, considering the client's high community profile and their accountability to military and federal regulations.

Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), improper handling of hazardous waste can lead to severe federal penalties. These include criminal fines of up to $50,000 per day of violation and imprisonment for responsible parties. Civil penalties may also be imposed, reaching up to $37,500 per day for each violation. This legal framework underscored the importance of our approach in managing the situation.

Our investigation revealed no contamination in the soil, water, or batteries. Furthermore, the site analysis estimated that the batteries had been buried since the 1970s, well before the waterways team had been established, absolving them of all responsibilities. Despite the absence of harm, we took proactive steps in community and government engagement. We highlighted our client's commitment to environmental safety and adherence to regulatory standards, thus mitigating potential legal and reputational risks.

This project not only averted a potential environmental crisis but also reinforced our client's image as a responsible and proactive entity in environmental management. Our approach exemplified effective crisis management, transparent communication, and strict compliance with environmental laws, thereby maintaining the client's integrity and avoiding significant legal penalties.

Part of our commitment to our clients is ensuring they are well-trained and self-sufficient enough to take preventative and initial steps in crisis management. We held field training with team leaders, focusing on developing spill protection plans, integrating HAZMAT management programs, conducting routine site inspections, and safely executing hazardous waste cleanups.
